Historical Information

This month in Arlington history…

On Nov. 11, 1921, the Unknown Soldier from World War I was ceremoniously interred at the site now known as the Tomb of the Unknowns on the eastern plaza of the newly-constructed Memorial Amphitheater. President Warren G. Harding officiated at the ceremonies in the new amphitheater, which was completed in 1920. The Unknown Soldier was meant to be symbolic of all service members who lost their lives during the war. By paying respects to this Unknown Soldier, Americans honor all the service members who did not return home from the war. More information on the interment of the World War I Unknown Soldier and the Tomb of the Unknowns can be found here.
