Historical Information

Supreme Court Justices Buried at Arlington National Cemetery

As of September 2005, there are 12 U.S. Supreme Court justices buried at Arlington National Cemetery:

William Howard Taft — Chief Justice 1921 to 1930. Buried March 11, 1930, in Section 30, Grave S-14.

Oliver Wendell Holmes — Associate Justice 1902 to 1932. Buried in March 1935, in Section 5, Grave 7004.

Hugo Black — Associate Justice 1937 to 1971. Buried Sept. 28, 1971, in Section 30, Grave 649.

Earl Warren — Chief Justice 1953 to 1969. Buried July 12, 1971, in Section 21, Grave S-32.

William O. Douglas — Associate Justice 1939 to 1975. Buried Jan. 23, 1980, in Section 5, Grave 7004-B-1.

Potter Stewart — Associate Justice 1959 to 1981. Buried Dec. 11, 1985, in Section 5, Grave 40-2.

Arthur Joseph Goldberg — Associate Justice 1962 to 1965. Buried in 1990, in Section 21, Grave S-35.

Thurgood Marshall — Associate Justice 1967 to 1991. Buried Jan. 29, 1993, in Section 5, Grave 40-3. Presidential exception to policy since he had no military service. "Civil Rights Advocate" is carved on his private headstone.

Warren Earl Burger — Chief Justice 1969 to 1986. Died June 25, 1995, and buried in Section 5, Grave 7015-2. Wife, Elvera, predeceased him, in 1994, and both granted a presidential exception to policy to be buried in the cemetery.

William J. Brennan Jr. — Associate Justice 1956 to 1990. Died July 24, 1997 and buried in Section 5, Grave 40. The World War II Army veteran is buried with Marjorie L. Brennan, who died in 1982, and Mary Fowler Brennan, whom he married thereafter and who died in 2000.

Harry A. Blackmun — Associate Justice 1970 to 1994. Died March 4, 1999, and buried in Section 5, Grave 40-4.

William H. Rehnquist — Chief Justice 1986 to 2005. Died September 3, 2005 and buried in Section 5, Grave 7049. The World War II Army veteran is buried with his wife, Natalie Ann Cornell Rehnquist, who predeceased him in 1991.
