VISITOR INFORMATION

United Spanish War Veterans Memorial (the Hiker)

Approaching Arlington National Cemetery along Memorial Drive, the first monument on the left is the United Spanish Veterans Memorial, known as the Hiker.

The solitary figure is an American veteran dressed in the uniform worn by the Army during the Spanish-American War. Displayed on its front face are the dates of that conflict, 1898-1902.

Mounted on the base of the memorial is a bronze cross bearing the names of the four theatres of service for the war: Cuba, Puerto Rico, the United States, and the Philippine Islands.

The memorial was erected by the United Spanish War Veterans, and was dedicated at a special ceremony on July 24, 1965.
